X .. Series - Series X1

Nothing concrete is known of the X1 series soldier. None have ever been seen on Dark Angel nor has there been any mention made of them, but it can be assumed that the X series soldier did not start at X5.
The presumption is that they were either too human or too animal to be considered a success by Manticore doctors and scientists. Because of the fact that X series soldiers shown have all been of the homosapien sort, it can be deduced that the X1's were also human and it's possible they were the first experiments to attempt to mix animal and human genes to produce a human-looking subject.
Because there was mention made of the X2 class being more animalistic and that 26 out of a class of 30 had to be put down, but no reference to the X1's behavior hinting at a pattern, it's more likely that the majority of the X1 class was human, possibly stronger than an average human, but without the animal speed, sight, hearing, smell and strength Manticore was looking for.
Another possibility was that the X2 class was the breach into the world resembling human and that the X1 class had too much animal DNA and were either confined to the basement or were experimented on within the walls of Manticore. Another possibilty, although considering the X2's survival, highly unlikely, was that the class of X1 soldiers created had all died before the X2's were brought into the world.
X .. Series - Series X2

What is known of this series of X soldier is not good. When they were in training they suddenly went insane one day, attacking one another with everything they could, ripping, biting and beating on body parts. In a now-confined room, their trainers were forced to put down all but four in a class of thirty to avoid a total loss.
It is still unknown what the catalyst in this massacre was, whether their young psyche's just weren't ready for all the training, or whether there was just too much animal in their DNA and the human side just could not overcome.
It is known that they were, in fact, human looking, unlike their predecessors, of whom we never saw or heard. The incident seemed to come as a surprise to Manticore officials and is considered a fluke by many at Manticore. They are the only group who seemed to have gone "wild" on one another, as far as we know.
The four who were not killed in the event were hidden away in special cells in the basement at Manticore, where all 'unsuccessful' experiments are kept. Over the coming years they were routinely subjected to a battery of tests to make sure future generations of X series soldier did not suffer the same fate.
X .. Series - Series X3

Like the X1 Series soldier, nothing has ever been said of X3 soldiers. For the same reason, it can be assumed that they were nothing extraordinary by comparison to the X2's (negative) or the X5's (positive).
The only thing that can really be said about the X3 soldier is that they probably went through the same training as all the other X5 soldiers, but because there were no references to a massive self attack, the series was not "defective" like the X2's.
It is possible that because they were probably born when the X2's attack took place that they spent the majority of their lives being tested for the same explosive tendancies to eradicate them from the soldiers by the time the X5 class was born.
X .. Series - Series X4

The only thing certain about the X4 class is that they were not as special to Manticore as the X5 class and they were not haywire like the X2. They were not animalistic in appearance, but did show signs of the independence that lead the X5's to an escape in 2009 - there was once mention of the Gossamers (a small dinosaur-like creature that are trained to hunt by scent) being able to track a rogue X4 soldier
It can be assumed that the X4 class had all the strengths and weaknesses of the X5 class, but being closer to the X2 class, and probably created before their destruction, they spent a greater part of their time being watched and studied by Manticore doctors and scientists.
Like the X3 class before them, however, they were probably average soldiers with nothing extraordinary about them. They were an improvement over the X3's, but definately not up-to-par with the X5's and it is speculated that they were used in training missions against the X5 soldiers to prove the X5's superiority.
X .. Series - Series X5

Probably the most popular X soldier, the X5's were the largest known class holding at least 60 in the Gillette Wyoming facility with their experimental doubles at a facility in Seattle Washington. This was not only the first series to be considered a complete success for the purpose they were bred, but were also the first to have used known cloning or "twinning" to create a double of each X soldier for various experiments.
It has been said that the X5 soldier was created and trained with a mind for individuality. They were to be "Officers", possibly overseeing large missions with X6, X7, X8 and X9 soldiers under their command. Because of this, special missions were developed to let each soldier learn the duties and responsibilities of being at the lead. While some excelled at this task (X5-599, X5-493 and X4-766) most were shown to display sharp skills at the lead also.
While being the most advanced series to date, and, some argue, the best series of all created at Manticore, they still had genetic defects which caused some pain and even death.
The most serious affliction, one that plagued the majority of the soldiers, was what Manticore scientists called "tremors", which was caused by a chemical imbalance in their brains. A dose of tryptophan (different doses dependant on the severity of the case) on regular intervals generally eradicated the tremors letting the soldiers return to active training. This abnormality did claim a small number of X5 soldiers whom were then studied in order to fix the disorder, something that has been accomplished with gene therapy.
X .. Series - Series X6

Created to be better, stronger and faster than the X5's before them, the X6's only downfall was that they'd come after the X5's and all their advancements were hindered by too many sessions with psy-ops trying to ensure their loyalty to Manticore. With added brain washing classes to their schedule for that purpose, they had eliminated what made the X5 class so special - their loyalty to one another.
The X6 soldiers were far more willing to believe what Manticore fed them and this cost many of them their lives when the Manticore facility outside of Seattle was cauterized and a beacon was put out to meet at predesignated spots. When the X6's arrived, some carrying X7's and X8's in tow, they were gunned down to avoid them getting out into the world and expose Manticore to regular citizens. It has been hinted at that the number of X6's that showed up at these check points was larger than any other group of X soldiers.
After X5-452 ("Max") and X5-494 ("Alec") disabled the signal, the X6's were ordered to scatter and go to ground, most unsure of what was happening. Some of these X6 soldiers were taken under the wing of an X5 who had retained their original individuality and were able to break the horrible news to the X6's - Manticore was trying to kill them.
Currently it is suspected that a large majority of those who escaped the fire are living within the boundaries of Terminal City, helping those inside with the same loyalty they gave Manticore not long before.
X .. Series - Series X7

X7's are an interesting group, mainly because there were two types. The first type seemed to be replicated from X5 DNA. The second group, theoretically the larger group, were all replicated from one another.
These soldiers were part of a two teired experiment with the X soldiers. Where the X1 - X4 were the perfecting stages, the X5's were the Officers and the X6's their loyal footsoldiers, it can be presumed that the X7's were meant for intel gathering (their hive minds able to transfer information through long distances fairly easily and undetected) with the capacity for combat skills, but the second group were never meant for undercover ops due to their similar appearance.
Group 1, the X5 replicated soldiers were created first, from the DNA of a select group of X5 soldiers. Mostly, though unknown at the time of creation, those who succeeded in escaping in 2009. It was learned later on that these soldiers were suceptible to the same ailments that plagued a small percentage of X5 soldiers and while genetic glitches have been fixed, many more await discovery and treatment.
Group 2, the self-replicated soldiers, were created with a hive mind, giving them the ability to transfer information to each other through ultrasonic waves that can be beamed into a computer and read by a technician. They can also transfer images through these waves.
Both groups are loyal to Manticore and are considered a success worthy of salvaging after the destruction of the Seattle Facility.
X .. Series - Series X8

Due to the rising costs of technology and the lowered budget for Manticore, one of the first things to see effects were the number and quality of Manticore subjects.
The X8 series, a small group of soldiers, was not given the extreme genetic attention their X7 predecessors were. It's possible the experiment was proven not as valuable as expected, but it's more possible the money necessary wasn't available. Manticore doctors liken the X8's to the X1's in a sense. Starting from scratch and trying to make something useful.
X8 soldiers were not given the same training as the other soldiers, but were often instead delegated to almost the "grunt-like" work of polishing shoes, washing clothing and running errands. They were, however, divided up into smaller factions that were given specific job classifications such as the Bugle Corps.
While not recieving the same amount of training as the other X series before them, they were trained on hand to hand combat, weaponry, sabatoge, survaillance, and intel gathering. Despite their cherubic appearance, they should be viewed as lethal as any other X series soldier.
X .. Series - Series X9
Class Size - Unknown
Year Span - 2018 - (est.)
Because Manticore backers were loosing faith, after the deliveries of the last X8 soldiers the Surrogate Mother Fund was depleated and not going to be refilled. This meant no new soldiers, an X9 generation, could be born until mothers were found to fill these vacant slots.
The second problem Manticore faced was that several X5's had wiped out the DNA database from which their soldiers were cultivated. This left Manticore with hard decisions to make. They knew they did not want to stop the progress of Manticore, but without these two very important componants of the process, they were at a loss as to how they were going to continue.
It was soon decided that the X5's themselves were going to carry the next generation of X soldiers. Under the new Breeding Program (see classified documents) X5 soldiers would be paired up based on their genetics and would copulate once a day until they were discovered to be pregnant.
While Manticore doctors were unsure of what the outcomes would be, they were willing to try something radical to bring the X9 generation into the fold. Not too long after the program had been instated, the Seattle Manticore Facility was cauterized, sending hundreds of X soldiers into the world.
It is unknown how many of them gave birth to children and what special abilities, if any, these children would have.

While the exact purpose of these transgens is still under debate, it is possible the solution is very simple. The X soldiers were made to fight and other special projects soldiers were made for specific purposes. These Manticore experiments could very well be just grunts - able to do large amounts of work fairly quickly and efficient. Most of these transgens have the basic look of a human but the looks are too much animal or some other thing to be mistaken for human

Generally human looking, these experiments were meant not to go into battle as soldiers, but to remain on the sidelines helping in other ways. Through advances in genetic manipulation, certain aspects of their physical being were enhanced for specific purposes. They're still combat ready, but were never intended to step foot on the feild.
Statistics and Logistics
Because X soldiers were made for combat training all over the world in all sorts of situations, it is impossible to have mobile statistics and logistics units on hand in every battle. For this purpose, some X soldiers were "adjusted" to become one-person S&L units.
Giving them extra neurons, packed in fatty cells restricted their abilities, however, to only statistics and logistics. Because their size and lack of physical abilities made them easy targets on the battlefeild, they were designed to be overlooked by anyone who came into contact with them. This allowed them to examine and collect data undetected and unharmed.
After X5-452 effectivly destroyed the Seattle Manticore facility, several of these S&L units escaped into Seattle. With their help, X soldiers began to re-group within Terminal City where they now reside.
Blood Doners
While the X soldiers were created with the same blood type to be able to transfuse on the battlefeild, no chances could be taken with the amount of blood available for these transfusions.
They Were created to donate blood on a pinch, and lots of it. Their altered DNA allows them to generate blood many times faster than a normal human, or even an X soldier.
Psychological Warfare
They created as an experiment where there were no expectations on the results. After years of enhancing bodily functions, Manticore looked to expand the mind. The first experiments were geared towards statistics and logistics units and were eventual successes, but Manticore looked to take this one step forward and discovered that pheramones could alter states of mind as well as give a person a control over another.
Using this theory, Manticore created a person who could produce pheramones at will that targeted the brain. This person could be two things: a truth syrum and a mind wipe.
